Synopsis

A companion book to The Chronicles of Prydain, gathering six short stories set before the events of the novels and published in 1973, later expanded with two earlier illustrated stories. Here readers meet Dallben as a foundling, found as a baby by three black-robed hags and destined to be the greatest of enchanters; Angharad, a princess of the House of Llyr and Eilonwy's mother; Kadwyr, the rascal crow; and Medwyn, the mystical protector of all animals. The tales tell the grim history of the sword Dyrnwyn, how Fflewddur Fflam came by his enchanted harp, and how Coll rescued the oracular pig Hen Wen when she disappeared at the hand of Arawn, Lord of the Land of Death.

Notes

  • Prequel short-story collection, set 15+ years before The Book of Three. Fails the foundational-collection exception: published AFTER the 5 novels, not before, stays Expanded.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.

  • Publication order, within The Chronicles of Prydain (standalone work): position 6 of 6: previous The High King (1968)
