Synopsis
In 1960, thirteen-year-old Sophie is sent to spend the summer with her cranky, imperious grandmother at the decaying Fairchild sugar plantation in rural Louisiana. Restless and unhappy, she explores the grounds, clears an overgrown garden maze, and makes a reckless wish for adventure. The wish carries her back to 1860, where the Fairchilds are her own ancestors. Because of her fair skin and her likeness to the family, they take her for a slave and put her to work in the big house. To survive she must learn the rules of plantation life and win the loyalty of the other enslaved children, who resent her position. The story sets the daily detail of 1860 against the world of 1960.
