Synopsis
On the island of Joya, where songbirds vanished the day the Governor arrived and only ragged ravens remain, Isabella Riosse lives with her father, a cartographer who once mapped faraway lands before the Governor forbade all travel by sea, walled the village of Gromera off from the rest of the island and banished those who resisted to the forests beyond. Isabella, forbidden to leave, has grown up on her father's maps and stars, dreaming of the places he drew. When a girl from her class is found murdered and her closest friend Lupe, the Governor's own daughter, disappears into the Forgotten Territories, Isabella volunteers to guide the search party. Beyond the walls lies a monster-haunted wasteland of dry rivers and smoking mountains, where, the old myths say, a fire demon is stirring, and the journey Isabella has begun to find her friend becomes a journey to save the island itself.
