Synopsis
In the west of Ireland, ten-year-old Pidge, Patrick Joseph, buys a tattered old manuscript in a second-hand bookshop in Galway and unwittingly frees the spirit of Olc-Glas, an ancient and malevolent serpent imprisoned in its pages. The Morrígan, the Great Queen, goddess of death and destruction, wants the serpent's poison for her own, and two of her aspects arrive in the city as a pair of strange women on a motorbike, followed by their hounds. Pidge and his five-year-old sister Brigit are charged with a quest to find a pebble stained long ago with the Morrígan's blood, the only means of destroying Olc-Glas. Helped by a host of creatures and figures from Irish myth, and pursued at every step by the hounds, the children set out across Ireland and into the otherworld.
