Synopsis

In this sequel to The City of Dreaming Books, Optimus Yarnspinner is now a commercially successful but creatively depleted author when he receives a letter apparently written by himself, to himself, from Bookholm. Investigating its impossible origin, he returns to the rebuilt city and reconnects with old friends, including Corodiak Smyke, growing drawn into an underground puppet theatre scene staged in the vast, transformed catacombs beneath the city, now reshaped by the fire that once devastated Bookholm. Clues suggest the letter may be connected to Homuncolossus, though its true source remains unconfirmed. As Optimus follows the trail deeper into the labyrinth and attends a special performance below ground, he becomes trapped there, caught between his search for the letter's origin and forces in the catacombs that seem to know more about his own fate than he does.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
