Synopsis

Twenty-year-old Kit Elton, recovering from a broken engagement, goes to stay with her godmother Sally Nancarrow in the English countryside. Sally's husband Tom disappeared two years earlier while writing in his study, and Kit now sleeps in that room. She dreams of a shimmering maze of flame-like bushes, and among Tom's papers she finds mentions of the Light Maze and a local legend about the Lightstone. With Sally's daughter Harriet and a local boy, Barney Medlicott, Kit begins to understand that Tom has passed into another realm. Meanwhile a woman from a group called the Club of True Seekers tries to use the Lightstone for her own ends, upsetting the balance between the Maze and the ordinary world.
