Synopsis

In the hot, humid southern land of Halruaa, ruled by wizards, the Jordaini are counsellors bred and trained to be without magic, and standing guard over their purity is Kiva the Magehound, an elven wizard and relentless persecutor of magic. Matteo, a young and idealistic jordain who has devoted his life to the truth, finds that he may have a hidden spark of magic after all; when he rescues a street waif, the impish, light-fingered Tzigone, from Kiva's minions, he begins to realise that nothing in Halruaa is what it appears. On the run from the mysterious Cabal, he seeks his own truth in the dismal Swamp of Akhlaur while battling a creature out of his nightmares, with the Magehound on his trail. The first Counselors and Kings novel.
