Synopsis
Fourteen-year-old Phoenix lives with her three colourful aunts and is thrilled to win an apprenticeship making shoes for the royal household in the Kingdom of Windward. Her delight grows into a frantic, sleepless energy, and then collapses into deep despair. The condition is known as the Illness of Two Kingdoms, and the usual treatment is a potion that numbs both the highs and the lows. At the palace the twelve princesses secretly dance their shoes to pieces every night, as in the old tale, and are left sick and unhappy by day. Phoenix, who understands the princesses' trouble from her own, sets out to help them, moving between the Kingdom of Brilliance and the Kingdom of Darkness.
