Synopsis
Berthe Duvet, a sensible Parisian maid, enters service in 1758 with the young Adele du Fourchet and follows her through convent school and marriage to the Duke of Malvoeux. The couple settle at the duke's ancestral chateau in the Jura mountains, where his family has long collected exotic birds and lives under an old curse. As Berthe narrates, the curse is tied to a missing white porcelain bird, and Adele's quiet life is unsettled by the duke's obsession and by the approach of the French Revolution. Outside the walls history rushes on, but the estate itself is cut off from the world, its inhabitants never aging and unseen servants tending every need.
