Synopsis
Sylvania is a small fifteenth-century kingdom whose twelve princesses vanish from their locked tower room every night and are found at dawn exhausted, their dancing slippers worn to shreds. Prince Vasile offers a reward to anyone who ends the mystery, but those who try to watch the girls vanish or fall into a deathlike sleep. Reveka, a thirteen-year-old herbalist's apprentice with a sharp tongue, wants the dowry so a convent will accept her and give her an herbery of her own. Her search leads her into a dying underworld, where she must face its ruler and put her own soul at risk. The story retells the Twelve Dancing Princesses with threads of Beauty and the Beast.
