Synopsis
Lady Rose de Lancastyr loses her rank when her stepmother turns her into a kitchen maid at the family manor and gives her a new name. The rats who share the house first pay her little heed, but they come to care for her. Char, a young rat prince, narrates alternate chapters. When the stepmother keeps Rose from the royal ball, the rats join forces to get her there, and Char is magically changed into a human footman so he can go along. At the palace he looks into the prince and the plans surrounding the court. The ball brings magic and secrets, and a threat to Rose's father, as Rose faces the choice of whom to trust.
