Synopsis
Prince Mawat returns home to find his father the king has vanished and his uncle has usurped the throne by claiming the role of the Raven's Lease, human servant to a powerful god whose blessing sustains the kingdom of Iraden. Accompanied by his loyal retainer Eolo, Mawat sets out to expose the treachery behind his father's disappearance and reclaim the place he believes is rightfully his, navigating a court now controlled by the uncle who displaced him. Interwoven with Mawat and Eolo's investigation is a narration from an ancient, watchful deity who has observed Iraden and the Raven's Lease relationship for centuries, offering a perspective on the kingdom's gods and politics that neither Mawat nor Eolo can access, as the true cost of the bargain between god and Lease slowly comes into focus.
