Synopsis

Picking up immediately where the previous volume left off, the concluding Book of Dust novel finds Lyra separated from her daemon Pantalaimon and travelling east in search of him, while Malcolm Polstead, working for the secret organization Oakley Street, follows her trail with a local guide. Both are shadowed by dangerous pursuers, among them Olivier Bonneville, who is using a stolen alethiometer to track Lyra, and by agents of the Magisterium intent on capturing her. Early in her journey Lyra's own alethiometer is seized by a gryphon in the desert, though she manages to recover part of it, and she continues onward toward the place she believes Pantalaimon has gone, navigating unfamiliar lands and competing agendas as she tries to be reunited with the daemon from whom she has become estranged.

Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
