Synopsis
Tom Ward was handed over to the County's spook by his mother, who told him he would be the spook's last apprentice. Now the long struggle with the Fiend, the Devil himself, is coming to a head. Tom, John Gregory and their allies, including Alice, prepare for a large battle to settle matters at last. Powerful enemies gather against them, and old allegiances are tested as the plan takes shape. Tom is no longer the farm boy who first arrived at the spook's door, but the burden on him is greater than ever. The question hanging over everything is whether his mother's prophecy will hold, and what will be left of the County and the people he cares about.
