Synopsis
At seven years old, Henry Day runs away from his troubled suburban family in 1960s America. In the woods he is taken by a band of hobgoblins, who rename him Aniday and raise him as one of their own, a forest-stalker living outside human time. In his place a changeling moves into the Day house and pretends to be Henry. Alternating chapters follow the two boys as they grow. Aniday finds human customs strange but cannot forget his earlier life, while the impostor, a gifted pianist, longs for books and wonders about a past that is not quite his. The novel is set vaguely in the American northeast and draws on the Yeats poem of the same name.
