Synopsis
Clare is the undead fox of Deadwood Forest, where leaves grow in a perpetual state of fall, not quite dead and not quite alive, just like him. Long ago he was struck by a car and, hovering between life and death, chose to become an Usher of wandering souls rather than cross into the Afterlife. His quiet days are upended when a badger soul named Gingersnipes knocks on his door and, despite his efforts, cannot leave Deadwood, an unprecedented mystery that threatens the balance between the living and the dead. The two set out to find Hesterfowl, a visionary grouse, whose revelation leaves Clare devastated and determined to change his fate.
