Synopsis
Edward Lewis Weyland is an anthropology professor at a university, a quiet and cultured man who is secretly a vampire. His condition is biological, not supernatural: he is a predator of a different species who lives among humans and must feed on them to survive. The book is built from five linked, novella-length episodes, each seen through the eyes of someone whose life crosses his path, among them a colleague, a teenage boy and a psychotherapist. As suspicion gathers around him, Weyland moves to New Mexico and has to build a new life and new sources of prey, while struggling with his violent urges, his sense of who he is, and the unknown origins of his kind.
