Synopsis
The Water Outlaws, published by S. L. Huang in 2023, is a gender-bent reimagining of the classical Chinese novel Water Margin. Lin Chong is a skilled and respected arms instructor training soldiers in service of the Emperor, her position hard-won and carefully maintained in a society that offers women like her little room for error. When the vendetta of a powerful, well-connected man tears her carefully built life apart, Lin Chong is stripped of her rank, publicly disgraced, and marked as a criminal with nowhere left to turn. Cast out of the world she had built for herself, she is found and recruited by the outlaw Bandits of Liangshan, a band living outside imperial law, whose ranks offer her an uneasy refuge and the beginning of a new, far more dangerous kind of life.
