Synopsis

The Wolf and the Woodsman follows Évike, a woman without magical power in a village of pagan wolf-girls who is offered as a sacrifice to the kingdom's Holy Order of Woodsmen when they come demanding a tribute. After monstrous forest creatures kill the other Woodsmen sent to collect her, Évike discovers that their captain is not what he seemed: he is Bárány Gáspár, a disgraced prince who needs magical aid to help his father win a losing war. Gáspár fears that if the king's side loses, his ruthless half-brother Nándor will seize the throne and turn his religious fanaticism against minorities like Évike's pagan village and the kingdom's Yehuli people. Circumstance forces the powerless woman and the exiled prince into an uneasy alliance as they travel together to try to prevent that catastrophic outcome.
