Synopsis
Frannie McCabe is a middle-aged police chief in Crane's View, New York, the small town he once longed to escape during his restless, aggressive youth. His quiet life is disrupted when a lame, three-legged dog called Old Vertue wanders into his office. Frannie plans to give the animal a proper burial after it dies, but the dog refuses to stay dead. Strange events follow, including a bizarre feather and the appearance of his teenage self. An alien named Astropel sends him through time to solve a cosmic puzzle, in a story that mixes time travel and aliens with questions about the meaning of life.
