Synopsis
Throne of Jade continues the Temeraire series after His Majesty's Dragon, opening as Laurence and Temeraire, having helped defeat French forces, are confronted by Chinese envoys demanding Temeraire's return. As a rare Celestial dragon, Temeraire is by Chinese law meant to serve only royalty, and his presence in Britain threatens to provoke a diplomatic crisis, since British officials fear an alliance between Napoleon and the isolationist Chinese empire would be unstoppable. To avert war, both nations agree that Laurence, Temeraire and their crew must sail to Imperial China, a long sea voyage that brings them into contact with the envoy Prince Yongxing and the albino Celestial dragon Lien. Once in China, the pair face repeated assassination attempts and discover that Yongxing is scheming to use Temeraire to legitimize a puppet ruler, entangling Laurence and Temeraire in a succession dispute far removed from the war they left behind.

Notes
- From the series record (Temeraire): 9-novel completed historical-fantasy sequence (2006-2016): the Napoleonic Wars in a world where an intelligent-dragon aerial corps supplements every nation's military. One continuous linear narrative; publication order equals in-story order. Unusual debut cadence: the first three novels were all published in 2006 (Del Rey rapid-succession launch).
