Synopsis
Diribani and her stepsister Tana live in a village in a magical version of India. At the village well each meets a goddess who grants her a gift. Whenever Diribani speaks, flowers and jewels fall from her lips. Tana, who is resentful and sharp-tongued, finds that snakes and toads come out of her mouth instead. Diribani is treated as a marvel and Tana is driven away, but neither gift turns out to be a simple blessing or curse. Each girl must work out what her gift means, who she can trust, and how to live with it, and their paths cross again as they travel far from home. The novel retells an old European fairy tale in a new setting.
