Synopsis
Vespertine is a 2021 standalone fantasy novel by Margaret Rogerson. It follows Artemisia, a novice training to become a Gray Sister, a nun trained to cleanse the bodies of the dead so their spirits cannot rise as vengeful revenants. When soldiers possessed by the dead attack her convent, Artemisia is forced to bond with a holy relic housing the soul of an unusually powerful and dangerous revenant in order to survive. The bond leaves her able to draw on the revenant's strength, but also marks her as a potential vespertine, a priestess trained to wield such relics, and the Church regards her with suspicion even as an army of the possessed dead grows. Artemisia must navigate an uneasy, distrustful partnership with the revenant bound to her while a wider mystery of saints and dark magic threatens to unravel around her.
