Synopsis
Weetzie is an unusual girl living in a dreamlike Los Angeles that the book calls Shangri-L.A. She is looking for love and finds a best friend in Dirk, a boy who shares her taste for old cars, vintage clothes and movies. Dirk's grandmother Fifi leaves him a lamp, and when Weetzie rubs it a genie appears and offers her three wishes. Weetzie wishes for a boyfriend, a house for herself and Dirk, and a boy for Dirk to love. The wishes come true, but each brings complications for her growing circle of friends and relatives as they work out what family and love mean.
