Overview
Lilith, subtitled "A Romance," is a standalone fantasy novel by Scottish writer George MacDonald, published in 1895 late in his career. The scholar Mr. Vane follows a raven-like figure through a mirror into a parallel realm of endlessly sleeping dreamers, where he meets the ageless, childlike "Little Ones" and their protector Lona, and ultimately confronts Lilith, described here as Adam's first wife, in order to protect them from her influence. Structured as a dream-vision allegory steeped in Christian and Kabbalistic imagery, the novel is considered one of the foundational works of modern fantasy literature and a direct influence on later writers including C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien, who both cited MacDonald as an important predecessor. It remains in print more than a century after its first publication and is frequently read as a meditation on death, sleep, and spiritual awakening rather than as conventional adventure fantasy.
