Overview
A standalone 2025 novel by Indian author Tashan Mehta. Two sisters bound as guardians of a vast cosmic entity, the "whale of babel," are pulled apart after one abandons her post and crosses a world of shapeshifting islands and centuries-old myth in search of her, testing the bond and the duty that once held them together. The novel draws on mythic, dreamlike imagery and a fragmented, lyrical structure to explore sisterhood, inheritance, and the cost of guardianship over something vast and half-understood. Reviewed and shelved by trade press as fantasy rather than as literary fiction with fantasy trappings, it was shortlisted for the 2026 Ursula K. Le Guin Prize for Fiction.
