Overview
Robert Beatty's Serafina books are spooky historical mystery-fantasies set at the Biltmore Estate, George Vanderbilt's Gilded Age mansion near Asheville, North Carolina, around 1899, and in the dark forests of the Blue Ridge Mountains around it. Serafina, the estate's secret Chief Rat Catcher, lives hidden in the basement with her pa, the maintenance man, unknown to the rich folk upstairs. When children begin to disappear, she joins forces with Braeden Vanderbilt, the owners' young nephew, against the Man in the Black Cloak, and in later books she becomes Biltmore's protector against darker forces, caught between the daylight world of the house and the wild kin of the forest, as she uncovers the puzzle of her own past. The first book won the 2016 Pat Conroy Southern Book Prize.
