Overview
The Shadowshaper Cypher is a completed urban fantasy trilogy by Daniel José Older, published between 2015 and 2020, rooted in Afro-Caribbean Brooklyn folklore. It follows Sierra Santiago, a teenage muralist who discovers she is heir to a line of “shadowshapers” — artists who can channel ancestral spirits into their work — after a menacing supernatural force begins erasing shadowshapers and their murals from her gentrifying neighborhood. Across the trilogy, Sierra and her circle of friends and family defend their community’s spiritual inheritance from a secretive society seeking to control shadowshaping for itself, culminating in Sierra’s full claim to her authority as a shadowshaper leader. The opening novel, Shadowshaper, was a 2015 Kirkus Prize finalist and a New York Times Notable Book of 2015.
