Overview
T.H. White's The Once and Future King is a foundational modern Arthurian fantasy, and this database's first single-work universe: a deliberately small-book-count structural contrast to the large multi-book sagas already in the canon. The unified 1958 novel joins together revised versions of parts written and published in stages from 1938, following Arthur from boyhood training under the wizard Merlyn through his founding of the Round Table, his kingship, and his downfall at the hands of Mordred, with the tragic affair between Lancelot and Guinevere woven through the later books. Set in White's own invented "Gramarye" standing in for medieval Britain, the work shifts in tone from comic adventure in its opening section to sustained tragedy and political allegory by its close. It inspired Disney's 1963 animated film The Sword in the Stone and the musical Camelot, which premiered in 1960 and was filmed in 1967.

Remains a separate, less commonly printed 5th book, not merged into standard trade editions of The Once and Future King.
