Overview
T.H. White's The Once and Future King is a foundational modern Arthurian fantasy, and this database's first single-work universe: a deliberately small-book-count structural contrast to the large multi-book sagas already in the canon. The unified 1958 novel joins together revised versions of parts written and published in stages from 1938, in the same way this project has always treated The Lord of the Rings' internal 'Books' as one work rather than several.

Two specific chapters (the ant-colony and wild-geese transformation episodes) were salvaged and relocated into the revised Sword in the Stone section of the 1958 omnibus as new boyhood episodes; the remainder, including the didactic framing and the final Arthur-Merlyn dialogues; was not published until 1977, posthumously, by University of Texas Press. Remains a separate, less commonly printed 5th book, not merged into standard trade editions of The Once and Future King.
The Sword in the Stone (1938) ; The original standalone 1938 edition, textually distinct from the version revised for the 1958 omnibus: the original includes a Madame Mim/Merlyn magical-duel sequence and other comic material later cut, and lacks the ant-colony/wild-geese episodes added from Book of Merlyn in 1958. Disney's 1963 animated film drew on this 1938 text, not the 1958 revision. The Witch in the Wood (1939) ; The original standalone 1939 edition. Heavily cut, the 1958 revision (retitled 'The Queen of Air and Darkness') is less than half this version's length, with most of the actual prose rewritten rather than lightly trimmed, a tonal shift toward darker and less comic material, and at least one character's narrative role changed. Registered separately to preserve the historical record without double-counting content against the unified 1958 Core Canon entry.
