Overview
In 1950s Jim Crow-era Florida, twelve-year-old Robert Stephens Jr. is sent to a brutal reform school where he begins seeing the ghosts of boys who never made it out, and must find a way to save his sister and himself before he becomes one of them. Tananarive Due's The Reformatory, published in 2023, is a standalone historical ghost story drawing on the real history of the Dozier School for Boys, a Florida reform school where abuse and unmarked graves were later documented, and on Due's own family history. It is Due's first universe in this canon and among the most decorated works of her career, winning the Bram Stoker Award for Best Novel in 2023 and receiving a nomination for the World Fantasy Award for Best Novel in 2024. The novel drew wide critical attention for using its ghosts not as genre ornament but as a direct reckoning with institutional violence.
