Eras

• The Old Empire
  Dragaera has no single absolute-year calendar attested across the Core Canon comparable to Middle-earth's Appendix B or Forgotten Realms' Dalereckoning. What IS attested is the 'Cycle': the Orb passes rulership among the 17 Great Houses in a fixed order, each House's individual reign lasting anywhere from roughly 289 to 4,913 years (per the fan-compiled Dragaera Timeline, SRC below) before passing to the next House in sequence. This era covers every reign before Adron's Disaster.
• The Interregnum
  A single continuous span with no Orb and therefore no sorcery in the Empire; fan chronology conventionally marks dates within it as 'I' (Interregnum) relative to Adron's Disaster.
• The Restored Empire
  Begins with Zerika IV's recovery of the Orb from the Paths of the Dead. Fan chronology marks this span 'PI' (post-Interregnum); a further, informal 'NR' (Norathar's Reign) marker is used once the Cycle turns from House Phoenix to House Dragon within this same span, since the Empire itself does not restart its calendar at that later, non-cataclysmic succession.

Concepts

• Elder Sorcery magic_system
  A pre-Imperial form of sorcery that, unlike Orb-based Dragaeran sorcery, does not depend on the Orb and so still functions during the Interregnum; wielded by Adron e'Kieron in Adron's Disaster and, centuries later, by Grita under her alias Orlaan, whose Elder Sorcery is further amplified by a Jenoine entity in Sethra Lavode.
• Sorcery magic_system
  Dragaeran magic proper: channels the Great Sea of Amorphia's chaos-energy through the Orb's administrative network, which is why sorcery city-wide fails during the Interregnum, when the Orb is lost.
• The Cycle calendar
  The rotation of Imperial rulership among the 17 Great Houses, each holding the Orb (and the throne) for a span before passing to the next House in a fixed order; individual reigns are attested to last anywhere from roughly 289 to 4,913 years.
• The Great Weapons object_artifact
  A small class of named, sentient, extremely powerful enchanted blades (Iceflame, Blackwand, Godslayer, Pathfinder, Lady Teldra among them) that recur across both sub-series; Sethra Lavode wields Iceflame, Vlad Taltos carries Godslayer.
• The Jenoine species
  An ancient, alien race predating the Dragaeran Empire, involved in the creation of Dragaerans and of Verra's own people, and antagonists in several books; Verra is a former Jenoine slave/servant who rebelled against them.
• The Orb object_artifact
  The Empire's governing magical artifact: an administrative network that enables Dragaeran sorcery empire-wide and is carried by the reigning Emperor/Empress. Its loss in Adron's Disaster (and disabling of sorcery empire-wide) is what defines the Interregnum; its recovery by Zerika IV ends it.
• Witchcraft magic_system
  Eastern (human) magic, distinct from Dragaeran sorcery: does not depend on the Orb, relies on herbs/psychic focus/ritual, and keeps working through the Interregnum. Vlad Taltos is taught witchcraft by his grandfather; Cawti later studies it with the Left Hand of the Jhereg.
