• First Age
  Counted from the rising of the Sun and Moon at the start of the age to the War of Wrath and the defeat of Morgoth.
• Second Age
  Begins after the War of Wrath; ends with Sauron's first defeat by the Last Alliance of Elves and Men.
• Third Age
  Begins with Isildur's return to Gondor after the Last Alliance's victory; ends with the passing of the Ring-bearers over the Sea.
• Fourth Age
  Begins after the passing of the Ring-bearers; no defined end in Tolkien's published writings.

Concepts

• Hobbits species
  A small, peace-loving people of the Shire and nearby regions; Bilbo, Frodo, Sam and Gollum (originally a Stoor Hobbit) all belong to this kind.
• Maiar species
  Lesser divine spirits (Ainur) who entered the world with the Valar; the Istari (wizards, including Gandalf and Saruman) and Sauron are all Maiar given bodily form.
• The One Ring object_artifact
  The Ring of Power forged by Sauron in the fires of Mount Doom in the Second Age; grants invisibility and, over time, corrupts and enslaves its bearer to Sauron's will. Its destruction is the central goal of The Lord of the Rings.
• The Silmarils object_artifact
  Three jewels made by Fëanor in the First Age, containing the light of the Two Trees of Valinor; their theft by Morgoth drives most of The Silmarillion's plot (Expanded Canon, outside this pilot's Core-Canon-focused character set).
• Westron (the Common Speech) language
  The lingua franca of most of the West of Middle-earth by the Third Age, presented in the text as though translated into English.
