Alain Damasio, born Alain Raymond on August 1, 1969, in Lyon, France, studied science in secondary school and was admitted to the ESSEC business school, which he left in 1991 without completing a degree. He then spent time in two extended writing retreats in the Vercors mountains and in Corsica before beginning his literary career. In 2008 he co-founded the video game studio Dontnod Entertainment, serving as narrative director until 2010 and directing the writing on the game Remember Me, which won the Paris Games Award for best script. His debut novel, La Zone du Dehors (1999), examined surveillance societies through ideas drawn from Michel Foucault and Gilles Deleuze. His second novel, La Horde du Contrevent (2004), and his 2019 novel Les Furtifs both won the Grand Prix de l'Imaginaire, and his work has also received the European Utopiales Prize and a digital-creation prize from the SACD.
