Anna Smith Spark, born around 1978-1979, grew up in Bishop's Stortford, England, and attended The Hertfordshire and Essex High School before earning a BA from University College London, an MA from the University of Essex, and a PhD in classical and cultural history from Birkbeck, University of London. Styled the 'Queen of Grimdark,' she made her debut with The Court of Broken Knives (2017), the first volume of the Empires of Dust trilogy, a grimdark epic fantasy centered on warfare, empire, and moral collapse; the trilogy continued with The Tower of Living and Dying (2018) and concluded with The House of Sacrifice (2019). The Court of Broken Knives received nominations for both the David Gemmell Award and the British Fantasy Award in 2018, and Kirkus praised it as likely to appeal to grimdark fans seeking the genre's most extreme edge. She has since published the standalone novels A Woman of the Sword (2023) and A Sword of Bronze and Ashes (2023), along with numerous short stories in genre anthologies. Her 2024 novella In the Shadow of Their Dying, co-authored with Michael R. Fletcher, received a shortlisting for the 2025 World Fantasy Award for Best Novella. Smith Spark's fiction is known for its unsparing depictions of violence, empire, and survival, often centering perspectives from marginalized or morally compromised characters.
