Astrid Lindgren (1907-2002) was a Swedish author of children's books and screenplays, born Astrid Ericsson and raised on a farm at Näs, near Vimmerby in Småland. Before writing full time she worked as a journalist and as a secretary in Stockholm. In 1944 she won second prize in a competition run by the publisher Rabén & Sjögren, and her breakthrough came the following year with Pippi Longstocking (1945), whose success made her the leading figure in Swedish children's literature. Over a long career she created many of the best-known characters in children's fiction, including Karlsson-on-the-Roof, Emil of Lönneberga, the Bullerby children and the boy detective known in English as Bill Bergson, and she also worked for many years as a children's book editor. Her fantasy novels Mio, My Son (1954), The Brothers Lionheart (1973) and Ronia, the Robber's Daughter (1981) are among her most celebrated works. She received the Hans Christian Andersen Award in 1958, and as of 2017 she was the most translated Swedish author, published in some 100 languages.
