Charlie Jane Anders was born July 24, 1969, in Tolland County, Connecticut, and grew up in Mansfield. She studied English and Asian literature at the University of Cambridge and spent time living in China before settling in San Francisco in the early 2000s. Anders co-founded Other Magazine, described as a publication of pop culture and politics for outsiders, with Annalee Newitz between 2002 and 2007, and in 2006 became a co-founding editor of the influential science fiction blog io9, a role she held until departing in 2016 to focus on novel writing; she has also long hosted the monthly San Francisco literary event Writers with Drinks. Her debut novel, Choir Boy (2005), explores gender transition, while All the Birds in the Sky (2016) and The City in the Middle of the Night (2019) earned wide critical acclaim, blending literary sensibility with speculative premises. Her young-adult Unstoppable trilogy—Victories Greater Than Death (2021), Dreams Bigger Than Heartbreak (2022), and Promises Stronger Than Darkness (2023)—won multiple Locus Awards, and her most recent novel, Lessons in Magic and Disaster, appeared in August 2025. Anders has won the Nebula Award for Best Novel, multiple Locus Awards, a Hugo Award, the John W. Campbell Award (now the Crawford Award), a Lambda Literary Award, and a Theodore Sturgeon Award. Her podcast Our Opinions Are Correct, co-hosted with Annalee Newitz, won the Hugo Award for Best Fancast in 2019, 2020, and 2022.
