Synopsis
Lessons in Magic and Disaster, published by Charlie Jane Anders in 2025, follows Jamie, a young woman grieving the recent death of her mother, who decides to cope with her loss by teaching her own mother, a lifelong skeptic in life, how to practice magic now that death has apparently opened her up to believing in it. What begins as an unusual, grief-driven project between mother and daughter grows more complicated as Jamie's magical training proves to have real and sometimes unpredictable effects, drawing in Jamie's ex-girlfriend and their wider circle of friends as the stakes of what Jamie is teaching her mother become harder to contain. The novel follows Jamie's attempt to hold onto her mother through magic even as that same magic begins to reshape both of their lives in ways Jamie did not anticipate when she started.
