Dahlov Ipcar (1917-2017) was an American painter and writer born in Windsor, Vermont, the daughter of the painters William and Marguerite Zorach. She grew up in Greenwich Village, New York City, and attended the City and Country School before leaving Oberlin College after one semester. In 1936 she married Adolph Ipcar, and in 1937 the couple moved to her parents' property in Georgetown, Maine, where they farmed and raised two sons. Her first solo exhibition, at the Museum of Modern Art in 1939, made her the museum's first female and youngest solo artist. Her first children's book illustration job was The Little Fisherman (1945), written by Margaret Wise Brown, and she went on to write or illustrate about thirty children's books. She also painted ten large murals, and she wrote four fantasy novels for older readers, which are darker in tone and mix reality with fantasy. She died in Brunswick, Maine, aged 99.
