Synopsis
Nora has just given birth to her first child when she is lured away from her husband and her home in the ordinary world of Midgard. She is carried to Erland, a cold realm shaped from Norse and Celtic myth, where the Erlking rules. His newborn heir, Prince Fiver, is starving, and Nora is brought there to nurse him. Fiver has strong powers, yet he cannot walk, and Nora is kept in the castle until he can. Back in Midgard, her husband marries a witch named Bab Magga with consequences of her own. The story is told from the viewpoints of Nora, her husband, her son and the prince, and draws on old ballads as well as Norse legend.
