David Garnett (1892-1981), known to friends as Bunny, was an English writer and publisher, born in Brighton. He was the only child of the critic and publisher Edward Garnett and the translator Constance Garnett. As a conscientious objector in the First World War he worked on fruit farms, and he became a prominent member of the Bloomsbury Group. In the 1920s he ran a bookshop near the British Museum with Francis Birrell, and he co-founded the Nonesuch Press with Francis Meynell. His first novel published under his own name, Lady into Fox (1922), won the James Tait Black Memorial Prize, and later work included A Man in the Zoo (1924), The Sailor's Return (1925) and Aspects of Love (1955), which inspired the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical. He married the illustrator Rachel Marshall in 1921 and, after her death in 1940, Angelica Bell in 1942. He later moved to France, near Montcuq, and wrote until his death in 1981.
