David Lindsay (1876-1945) was a Scottish author born in Lewisham, England, and raised partly in Jedburgh. He worked as an insurance clerk at Lloyd's of London and served in the First World War, beginning his service at the age of 40. From 1919 to 1929 he lived in Porth, Cornwall, where he wrote full-time. His first novel, A Voyage to Arcturus (1920), sold fewer than 600 copies at first but later came to be regarded as an important underground novel, influencing C. S. Lewis, and admired by J. R. R. Tolkien. His other novels include The Haunted Woman (1922), Sphinx (1923), The Adventures of Monsieur de Mailly (1926) and Devil's Tor (1932). Later in life he and his wife ran a boarding house in Brighton, which did not prosper. He died in Hove in 1945.
