Elizabeth Goudge (1900-1984) was an English writer of novels, short stories and children's books, born in the cathedral city of Wells. Her first book, The Fairies' Baby and Other Stories (1919), failed to sell, and several years passed before her first novel, Island Magic (1934), drawn from the Channel Island stories she had learned from her mother's Guernsey family, became an immediate success. She went on to become a popular author in both Britain and the United States; her best-known adult novel is Green Dolphin Country. The Little White Horse (1946), published by the University of London Press, won the Library Association's Carnegie Medal as the year's best children's book by a British author. She was a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature, and her work regained attention decades later when J. K. Rowling named The Little White Horse among her favourite childhood books.
