Elizabeth Marie Pope (1917-1992) was an American scholar and author, born in Washington, D.C., who specialised in Elizabethan England and the works of John Milton and William Shakespeare. She took her B.A. at Bryn Mawr College in 1940 and a Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University in 1944, and that autumn joined the English faculty of Mills College in Oakland, California, where she rose from assistant professor to full professor in 1962 and later headed the English department. Alongside her academic work, including a study of Milton's Paradise Regained, she wrote two novels for young readers that blend history and the supernatural: The Sherwood Ring (1958), in which an orphaned girl meets the ghosts of the American Revolutionary period at her family's estate, and The Perilous Gard (1974), a Tudor-era retelling of the Tam Lin ballad that was named a Newbery Honor book in 1975.
