Synopsis
In 1558 Kate Sutton, a lady-in-waiting to the Princess Elizabeth, pays for a careless letter written by her younger sister and is exiled by Queen Mary Tudor to a remote castle known as the Perilous Gard. Its master, Sir Geoffrey Heron, is seldom there; the villagers fear the household and the servants will not explain why, and they speak only in awe of those who dwell by the ancient well. Kate soon learns that Sir Geoffrey's four-year-old daughter, Cecily, has disappeared, and that he and his younger brother, Christopher, are keeping a secret. Her refusal to leave the secret alone leads her beneath the hills into the world of the Fairy Folk, an old people whose customs include human sacrifice.
