Eva Ibbotson (21 January 1925 - 20 October 2010) was a Vienna-born British novelist who wrote both humorous fantasy for children and romantic novels for adults. Born in Vienna, she moved to England when the Nazis came to power. She took a degree in physiology at Bedford College, London, in 1945 but disliked experimenting on animals; she married, raised four children, and later trained as a teacher at the University of Durham. Her first children's book, The Great Ghost Rescue, appeared in 1975, and she went on to write more than twenty books for young readers, among them Which Witch?, The Secret of Platform 13, Island of the Aunts and Dial-a-Ghost, many of them nominated for major British children's book awards. Journey to the River Sea, written in honour of her late husband Alan, a naturalist, won the Smarties Gold Award in 2001. She died at her home in Newcastle at the age of 85.
