Gwendolyn Willow Wilson was born August 31, 1982, in Monmouth County, New Jersey, and grew up in Morganville to atheist parents. She discovered comics in fifth grade through an X-Men anti-smoking pamphlet and later moved to Boulder, Colorado. She attended Boston University to study history; during her sophomore year, health issues prompted her to explore various religions, and she ultimately converted to Islam during college. After graduating in 2003, she taught English in Cairo, deepening her Islamic practice while beginning her career as a music critic for DigBoston, later contributing to publications including The Atlantic Monthly and The New York Times Magazine, and becoming the first Western journalist granted a private interview with Egypt's Grand Mufti. Her graphic novel Cairo (2007) earned wide critical acclaim, and she created the character Kamala Khan for Marvel's Ms. Marvel relaunch (2014–2019). Her debut novel, Alif the Unseen (2012), won the World Fantasy Award. Other works include Air, Invisible Kingdom, Poison Ivy, and The Hunger and the Dusk. Wilson has won Hugo, Eisner, and World Fantasy Awards, plus the American Book Award. Since 2007 she has lived in Seattle with her husband, Omar, and their two daughters.
