Overview

Alif the Unseen (2012) is a standalone novel by G. Willow Wilson, following Alif, a young hacker in an unnamed Middle Eastern emirate, who goes into hiding from state security after being given a mysterious book, The Thousand and One Days, that blurs the line between old Arabic folklore and modern computer code, drawing him into the hidden world of the jinn even as he is hunted through the city's streets and networks alike. The novel blends contemporary hacker culture and surveillance-state technology with Arabic mythology and the political unrest of the early 2010s Middle East, and is G. Willow Wilson's second universe admitted to this database, alongside the unrelated The Bird King. It won the World Fantasy Award for Best Novel in 2013 and was a finalist for numerous other prizes, including the Locus Award and the Center for Fiction First Novel Prize, drawing praise for fusing genre fantasy with contemporary geopolitical themes.
