Overview
A Fine and Private Place is Peter S. Beagle's 1960 debut novel, published by Viking Press four years before The Last Unicorn. Jonathan Rebeck, who has lived unseen inside a Bronx cemetery for nearly two decades, befriends the newly dead and a wisecracking raven who brings him food, until the ghosts of a schoolteacher and a bookshop clerk fall in love after death, and a widow's grief and the couple's approaching fate draw Rebeck back toward the living world he abandoned. Contemporary reviews were mixed to positive: the New York Times praised its "smooth, precise, graceful prose" while finding it did not go far enough, whereas genre outlets such as Galaxy were more enthusiastic, and later writers, including Charles de Lint, praised it as a beautifully written, emotionally serious meditation on mortality and connection. The novel remains one of the earliest and most distinctive American urban fantasies to treat a cemetery as a lived-in fantastical setting.
