Peter S. Beagle is an American novelist and screenwriter born April 20, 1939, in the Bronx, New York City, the son of history teacher Simon Beagle and Rebecca Soyer; three of his uncles, Moses, Raphael, and Isaac Soyer, were noted painters. He graduated from the Bronx High School of Science in 1955 and earned a degree in creative writing from the University of Pittsburgh, later holding a Stegner Fellowship in creative writing at Stanford University, where he studied alongside Ken Kesey and Larry McMurtry. Beagle wrote his debut novel, A Fine and Private Place, at just nineteen years old, publishing it in 1960. His most celebrated work, The Last Unicorn (1968), became a landmark of modern fantasy and was later adapted into an animated film for which Beagle wrote the screenplay. Other major works include The Innkeeper's Song (1993) and Tamsin (1999). His novelette "Two Hearts," a sequel to The Last Unicorn, won both the Hugo Award for Best Novelette and the Nebula Award in 2006 and 2007 respectively. Beagle received the World Fantasy Award for Life Achievement in 2011 and the Damon Knight Memorial Grand Master Award in 2018, cementing his standing as one of fantasy's most honored living authors.
