Synopsis
The Way Home collects two novellas set in the world of The Last Unicorn. The first, Two Hearts, follows Sooz, a girl from a village plagued by a griffin, who journeys to ask the king for help and along the way meets Schmendrick and Molly Grue, figures from the earlier story; the group returns with her to confront the threat menacing her home. The second novella, Sooz, picks up years later, following the same young woman, now older, as she sets out on a perilous journey of her own. Blending a meditation on love and loss with a search for self-understanding, it carries forward Beagle's familiar mix of lyrical prose, gentle humor, and wisdom that has long drawn readers back to the world he first created.
Where it sits
- Universe: The Last Unicorn
- Series: not part of a registered series (standalone work within its universe)
- Author: Peter S. Beagle
Notes
- Collects Two Hearts (2005, reprinted) alongside 'Sooz', a newly written second novella continuing Sooz's story years later -- the 'lesser-known sequel' checked carefully at this admission. New content (Sooz) registered under this 2023 collection's own publication year; Two Hearts itself is separately registered under its original 2005 publication per this project's textual-integrity convention.
Neighbouring works
Publication order and internal chronology are tracked as two separate orderings and are never conflated: a book's place in one says nothing about its place in the other.
- Publication order, within The Last Unicorn (standalone work): position 3 of 3: previous Two Hearts (2005)
